Do pets go to heaven? This is a question I get everywhere I go. If you have loved a dog, a horse, or another animal, you understand why people ask it. We want to know whether we will see those familiar companions again.
My answer is yes. I believe pets will be there, and I want to show you the passage that leads me to that belief.
Let us look at Revelation 5. As John describes the worship surrounding the throne of God, the picture grows until it includes every creature. That is the part I want you to notice.
Every Creature Joins the Praise
Revelation 5:11–13 begins with an immense gathering of angels around the throne, the living creatures, and the elders. Their praise declares the worthiness of the Lamb who was slain.
Then John describes every creature in heaven, on earth, under the earth, and in the sea joining in praise. Blessing, honor, glory, and power are directed to the One who sits on the throne and to the Lamb.
Read that slowly. Every creature. When I read those words, I see animals included in this great scene of worship. I believe the animals we have loved belong in that picture, too.
The Lamb is at the center of it all. This passage gives us a picture of praise reaching throughout creation, and that is where I begin when someone asks me about pets in heaven.
The Hope of Seeing a Familiar Companion
Yes, I believe we will see our pets again. When I think about that, I can imagine a familiar dog welcoming its owner with a wagging tail. There is warmth in that picture, and it expresses the hope I see in John’s description of every creature praising God.
I also believe animals will be able to communicate. Notice that John describes the creatures giving praise. In my understanding, that points to an ability to articulate that praise.
So my answer is more than a general belief that there will be animals. I look forward to the possibility of recognizing those familiar companions and hearing them communicate. That is how I understand this scene in Revelation.
Why I Look Back to the Garden
There is another part of this question that takes us back to Genesis. In Genesis 3, the serpent speaks to Eve, and she carries on a conversation with him. What stands out to me is that the account does not describe her reacting with astonishment simply because an animal was speaking.
That leads me to believe that animals could communicate with people in the Garden of Eden. I believe sin changed that, and that losing their ability to articulate was part of the effect of the curse.
I compare it with what happened to human language at the Tower of Babel in Genesis 11. People who could understand one another suddenly could not. In a similar way, I believe animals experienced a change in their ability to communicate when sin entered the world.
That is the connection I see between the garden and the future praise described in Revelation. I believe their ability to communicate will be restored.
Looking Forward With Hope
If you are asking whether pets go to heaven, I want you to understand why my answer is yes. Revelation’s picture of every creature praising God gives me hope of seeing the animals we have loved again.
And as we think about that hope, let us keep our attention on the One receiving the praise. Every creature in that scene points us toward God and the Lamb.
I look forward to that future. I look forward to the fullness of life in God’s presence, and I believe the animals we love will be part of it.
